Navigation for runners in Wales: map, compass and the cloud base
The skill that separates a good day out from a mountain rescue callout. Non-negotiable above about 500m in Wales.
Welsh hills produce low cloud with great enthusiasm, and running makes navigation harder than walking does: you cover ground faster, you make more decisions per minute, and you are usually colder when you stop to think.
Carry a paper map and compass, know how to take and follow a bearing, and practise relocating before you need to. A phone is a fine primary tool and a terrible only tool.
