Mountain running in Wales

Steep, rough, high ground - and the specific skills it asks for that road running never teaches you.

Mountain running in Wales is less about fitness than most people expect and more about three things: pacing a climb you cannot run all of, moving confidently downhill over ground that moves under you, and knowing when to turn round.

The terrain in Eryri and Bannau Brycheiniog is genuinely mountainous, and the usual metrics stop applying. A ten-kilometre mountain run can take twice as long as a ten-kilometre road run and leave you more tired than a half marathon. That is not a sign you are unfit; it is what the ground does.
